Synopsis

Chiraiya – meaning “little bird” – is a bold, deeply sensitive Hindi social drama that dares to confront one of the most deeply normalised and deliberately silenced injustices within Indian households: the dangerous myth that marriage automatically grants lifelong consent.

The series revolves around the life of Kamlesh (Divya Dutta), the “ideal” daughter-in-law of a seemingly perfect, close-knit Indian family. For years, Kamlesh has been the glue holding the household together, cherishing the traditional values and the appearance of harmony that defines their social standing. Her world is built on the belief that her family is a sanctuary of love and mutual respect, a facade she maintains with unwavering dedication.

However, this stable reality begins to shatter when she discovers a haunting truth hidden within the family’s private quarters. Kamlesh learns that her sister-in-law, Pooja (Prasanna Bisht), is facing systemic sexual abuse and coercion within her marriage. The discovery leaves Kamlesh paralyzed, forced to confront the uncomfortable reality that the men she respected and the “norms” she upheld are part of a deeply rooted patriarchal system that treats consent as an afterthought once a wedding is finalized.

Torn between the crushing weight of “family honor” and her personal conscience, Kamlesh finds herself at a moral crossroads. The narrative tracks her quiet yet powerful awakening as she refuses to ignore the injustice happening under her own roof. What begins as a personal dilemma evolves into a courageous battle against generations of inherited silence, as she chooses to stand by Pooja, even if it means dismantling the very family structure she once spent her life protecting.

The series serves as a poignant exploration of the “normalized” injustices tucked away in the corners of ordinary homes. It avoids sensationalism to focus on the everyday silences and the emotional labor women endure to keep the peace. Through Kamlesh’s journey, Chiraiya challenges the societal mindset regarding marital rape in India, highlighting that marriage is not a license for abuse and that silence should never be mistaken for consent.

Historic Debut: This marks Divya Dutta’s first OTT lead role after decades of acclaimed supporting performances in Bollywood.
