Synopsis

The Taj Story is a bold and deeply controversial Hindi courtroom drama built around one of India’s most debated historical questions was the Taj Mahal originally a Hindu temple?

The film follows the journey of Vishnu Das (Paresh Rawal), a seasoned tourist guide who has spent over 30 years sharing the history of the Taj Mahal with visitors from around the world. His life takes a drastic turn when a private, candid conversation is recorded and leaked online. In the viral video, Das questions the long-standing historical narrative of the monument, suggesting that its origins may predate the Mughal era.

The fallout is immediate; Das faces social ostracization, loses his job, and is branded a “propaganda peddler.” To reclaim his dignity and prove his research, he files a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), leading to a high-stakes courtroom battle. The case pits him against Advocate Anwar Rashid (Zakir Hussain), as they engage in a fierce intellectual debate over architectural evidence, historical manuscripts, and the “sealed rooms” of the monument. The story explores themes of “intellectual terrorism,” the subjective nature of history, and the emotional resilience of a man standing against a centuries-old consensus.

Music: Rohit Sharma
Cinematography: Satyajit Hajarnis
Production: Swarnim Global Services Pvt. Ltd.

The film raises uncomfortable questions about who gets to decide what is true, who owns history, and whether curiosity itself can become dangerous in the wrong hands.

Controversy

The film faced widespread criticism for historical inaccuracies and was widely labelled as a propaganda piece promoting Hindutva narratives. A promotional poster depicting a Shiva idol emerging from the Taj Mahal’s dome sparked major backlash — Paresh Rawal later deleted the post and issued a disclaimer stating the film does not make any religious claims.
