Synopsis

Sister Midnight (2025) is a dark, surrealist punk comedy and horror-drama that follows the psychological and physical unraveling of an Indian bride. After premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival (Directors’ Fortnight), the film saw its global theatrical release throughout 2025.

The story centers on Uma (Radhika Apte), a rebellious and misanthropic small-town woman who moves to a cramped, single-room “kholi” in Mumbai following an arranged marriage to Gopal (Ashok Pathak), a passive and often intoxicated husband. Totally unsuited for the traditional role of a housewife, Uma finds herself bored, neglected, and increasingly alienated by the heat, noise, and prying neighbors of the city.

Her internal frustration soon manifests in bizarre, “feral” ways. Uma begins to experience strange nocturnal cravings, leading her to roam the streets of Mumbai at night. Her transformation takes a turn into the macabre as she develops a taste for blood, hunting small animals like birds and goats. This “vampiric” or “monstrous” descent serves as a metaphor for her rebellion against the shackles of domesticity and societal expectations.

The film blends absurd humor with gritty realism, exploring themes of feminine wrath and the “misfit” identity in urban India. By the end, Uma must confront whether she can ever truly fit into the world or if she must embrace her new, feral identity to find freedom.
