Synopsis

40 Acres (2025) is a Canadian post-apocalyptic survival thriller that explores themes of race, land ownership, and family legacy. Directed by R.T. Thorne and starring Danielle Deadwyler, the film originally premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) before its wide release in July 2025.

The story is set in a near-future “14 Years Later” world where a catastrophic fungal pandemic has wiped out 98% of the world’s animal life, leading to global famine and civil war. Farmable land has become the world’s most valuable currency.

Hailey Freeman (Danielle Deadwyler), a former U.S. soldier and descendant of African-American farmers who settled in Canada after the American Civil War, runs her farm like a military fortress. Alongside her Indigenous husband, Galen (Michael Greyeyes), and their children, Hailey enforces a strict code of survival: trust no one and defend the perimeter at all costs.

The tension rises when her eldest son, Emanuel, begins to rebel against his mother’s isolationist rules after meeting a mysterious girl named Dawn in the woods. His desire for human connection inadvertently exposes the family’s location to a ruthless, starving militia and a band of cannibals. The family must make a final stand to protect their “40 acres”—not just as a source of food, but as their ancestral legacy and a symbol of their hard-won freedom.
