Synopsis

The third season of Shrinking continues the heartwarming and messy journey of Jimmy Laird, a therapist who decided to cope with his own grief by being brutally honest with his patients. After spending the previous seasons learning about forgiveness, the new episodes focus on the theme of “moving forward.” Jimmy is now trying to navigate life with more stability, but he faces a major personal shift as his daughter, Alice, prepares to head off to college, leaving him to face an empty nest and a new existential crisis.

Meanwhile, Paul Rhoades continues to struggle with the progression of his Parkinson’s disease. In a significant new storyline, he connects with a character played by Michael J. Fox, who provides a unique perspective on living with the condition. Paul must decide how much control he is willing to give up as his symptoms become harder to ignore, all while maintaining his role as a mentor and father figure to the people in his “found family.”

The rest of the group is also dealing with major life transitions. Gaby is reconsidering her career path and looking for more fulfillment, while Brian and Charlie navigate the challenges of being new parents after adopting a child. Liz, the ever-involved neighbor, finds a new sense of purpose by helping Brian and Charlie, though she still struggles to step back from her protective role in Alice’s life.

As the season unfolds, the boundaries between professional help and personal friendship continue to blur. The show explores whether Jimmy can truly find happiness again and if the group’s “safety bubble” can survive as everyone starts to grow in different directions. With the introduction of Jimmy’s father, played by Jeff Daniels, the season dives deep into the roots of Jimmy’s personality and the family dynamics that shaped him.
