Synopsis

Kadaisi Vivasayi (The Last Farmer) is a soulful and meditative drama set in a remote village in Tamil Nadu, where the landscape is changing as quickly as the people. The story follows Mayandi, an 85-year-old farmer who is the last holdout in a community that has largely abandoned agriculture for urban jobs or real estate deals. Mayandi lives a simple, self-sufficient life, deeply connected to his ancestral land and unimpressed by the “modern” conveniences or hybrid seeds that others try to push on him.

The village’s quiet routine is interrupted when an ancient tree is struck by lightning, prompting the elders to organize a long-delayed festival for their local deity. To perform the ritual, they require freshly harvested paddy from the village land. Since everyone else has sold their plots or stopped farming, the entire responsibility falls on Mayandi. He agrees to cultivate the grain, viewing the task not just as a religious duty, but as a natural extension of his lifelong devotion to the earth.

However, a bizarre turn of events leads to Mayandi being falsely accused of killing peacocks (a protected species) on his land. Despite his obvious innocence and fragile age, the rigid legal system takes hold, and the old man is placed in judicial custody. The narrative shifts into a gentle satire of the Indian legal and bureaucratic machinery, contrasting the cold, procedural world of the courtroom with Mayandi’s organic, unhurried way of life.

While Mayandi is in jail, the fate of the village festival and the ripening crops hangs in the balance. The story expands to include a cast of eccentric villagers, including Ramaiah, a man who has lost his mental balance but found a different kind of spiritual enlightenment. The film beautifully captures how the community must eventually come together to protect the old man and his harvest, serving as a poignant tribute to the vanishing world of traditional farming.

The film concludes with a deeply moving resolution that emphasizes the dignity of labor and the vital importance of staying connected to one’s roots. Director M. Manikandan uses a realistic, documentary-like style to highlight the struggles of small-scale farmers against corporate greed and societal apathy. It is a quiet yet powerful cinematic experience that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the sanctity of the land.
