Synopsis

The final chapter of the Warrens’ saga begins by unearthing a trauma from their past. In 1964, a young Ed and Lorraine investigate a malevolent antique mirror, an encounter so violent it leads to the near-fatal, stillborn birth of their daughter, Judy. Though Lorraine’s desperate prayers manage to revive the infant, the experience leaves the couple scarred, eventually leading to their quiet retirement decades later. By 1986, the Warrens have traded active demonology for a peaceful life of lectures and safety, unaware that the shadow from that mirror has never truly left them.

The peace is shattered when an adult Judy Warren (Mia Tomlinson) begins experiencing terrifying psychic visions that mirror her mother’s abilities. Her visions lead her to West Pittston, Pennsylvania, where the Smurl family is being tormented by a relentless demonic infestation. Unbeknownst to the family, the centerpiece of their haunting is the very same antique mirror the Warrens fled years ago, which has now resurfaced to finish what it started. Drawn by an inexplicable pull, Judy arrives at the Smurl home alone, forcing her retired parents to step back into the line of fire for one final, deeply personal case.

As the haunting escalates, the demon reveals its true intent: it isn’t just haunting a house, it is hunting the Warren bloodline. The Smurl residence becomes a battleground where the physical and spiritual worlds collide, featuring harrowing manifestations including the reappearance of a giant, distorted Annabelle. Locked in a desperate struggle that tests their faith and their fading strength, Ed and Lorraine must guide Judy to embrace her own psychic legacy to shatter the mirror’s hold once and for all.

The film serves as a poignant “swan song” for the franchise’s legendary couple, moving beyond standard horror to explore the weight of their lifelong battle against evil. In a climactic contest of wills, the family stands united against the disintegration of their souls, concluding with a bittersweet resolution. Director Michael Chaves confirmed that Last Rites is the definitive conclusion to the current “Phase 1” of the Conjuring Universe. However, a prequel titled The Conjuring: The First Communion is already in development for a 2027 release, and a TV series adaptation for Max is currently in pre-production
