Synopsis

The Punjabi web series Tootan Wala Khooh is set to premiere exclusively on the Chaupal app. The series is a highly anticipated adaptation of the legendary Punjabi novel of the same name by Giani Sohan Singh Seetal, which is considered a masterpiece of Punjabi literature.

Set against the poignant backdrop of pre-partition Punjab in the 1930s and 40s, the story centers on the Tootan Wala Khooh (The Well of Mulberry Trees), a sweet-water well co-owned by two close friends from different communities: Sajjan Singh and Ilam Deen.

The narrative explores the deep-rooted harmony of village life that is slowly poisoned by external forces. A greedy, local businessman eyes the valuable well and begins a manipulative campaign to trap the owners in a debt cycle. As the Indian independence movement gains momentum and religious tensions are fanned by political extremists, the bond between the two friends—and the entire village is pushed to its breaking point. The “well” serves as a powerful metaphor for the soul of Punjab, witnessing the shift from communal unity to the tragic heartbreak of the 1947 partition.
