Synopsis
The latest collaboration between director Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone, Bugonia (2025), has just arrived on major streaming platforms in India following its successful theatrical run and multiple nominations for the upcoming 2026 Academy Awards.
Bugonia is a brilliantly deranged, darkly hilarious, and psychologically gripping black comedy from the mind of one of cinema’s most audacious auteurs. Michelle Fuller, the CEO of the pharmaceutical conglomerate Auxolith, is abducted by conspiracy theorist Teddy Gatz and his autistic cousin Don. Teddy’s mother Sandy previously participated in a clinical trial for an Auxolith drug that rendered her comatose leaving Teddy consumed by rage, grief, and a desperate need to assign blame to something beyond the ordinary.
Teddy is convinced that the world is heading towards destruction and that Michelle is not merely a ruthless corporate executive, but an alien who has come with a mission to destroy humanity. In order to save the world, Teddy kidnaps Michelle and takes her to a remote location, determined to extract the truth he believes she is hiding.
Slowly and gradually, the film blurs the lines between reality and delusion and viewers begin to wonder if Michelle really does have something to hide. It is the constantly shifting power play between Teddy and Michelle that keeps the film so investing and unpredictable equal parts threatening and gullible, funny and terrifying.
The film is not content merely to mock corporate amorality or internet paranoia — it is more interested in what happens when belief becomes the only available structure in a life stripped of trust. A searing, deeply unsettling, and wildly entertaining satire of conspiracy culture, corporate greed, and the fragile human need to make sense of a world that refuses to explain itself.
