Synopsis

Gangland: The City of Crime is a gritty, high-stakes expansion of the cult-favorite Gangland in Motherland universe, shifting the focus to a raw and unforgiving portrayal of the Punjabi underworld. Set against the turbulent backdrop of 1980s Punjab, the story centers on the legendary partnership between two powerful figures, Sultan and Hakam. For years, they lead a notorious robbery gang, commanding respect and instilling fear across the region. However, the narrative takes a sharp turn following a massive heist when Sultan decides he wants to leave the world of crime behind for a life of peace, creating a massive rift with the power-hungry Hakam.

The heart of the film lies in this singular act of betrayal and the ideological clash that follows. Hakam, unwilling to let go of his criminal empire or his partner, views Sultan’s departure as a personal insult. This friction escalates into a bloody falling out that doesn’t just end with the two men; it triggers a generational cycle of revenge. As the two former friends become bitter rivals, they draw in a new wave of younger, more reckless gangsters, turning a personal grudge into a full-scale underworld war that consumes everyone in its path.

Director Savio Sandhu moves away from the polished, heroic tropes often seen in regional action cinema, opting instead for a realistic and visceral “Gangs of Wasseypur” style aesthetic. The film masterfully explores the psychology of loyalty and the inevitable cost of a life of crime. It portrays the ripple effect of violence, showing how the decisions made by Sultan and Hakam in 1986 continue to haunt their families and their city for decades. The “City of Crime” becomes a character itself—a place where alliances are temporary and the next betrayal is always just around the corner.

Featuring powerhouse performances by Sippy Gill and Nishawn Bhullar, the movie has been praised for its intense dialogue and atmospheric cinematography. It successfully bridges the gap between the original web series and a cinematic epic, making it a must-watch for fans of hardcore crime dramas. By the time the final confrontation occurs, the film leaves the audience with a haunting reflection on the futility of power and the permanence of the scars left by the “gangland” lifestyle.
