Synopsis
Haq (2025) is a powerful Hindi courtroom drama set against the backdrop of the late 1970s and 80s in Aligarh. The story centers on Shazia Bano, a devoted wife and mother whose life is turned upside down when her husband, Abbas Khan, a respected lawyer, returns from a trip with a second wife. Finding herself suddenly pushed to the periphery of her own home, Shazia’s world shatters when Abbas attempts to cast her out entirely using the practice of “triple talaq.”
Refusing to surrender her dignity or the future of her three children, Shazia decides to do the unthinkable for a woman in her position at the time: she takes her husband to court. Supported by her steadfast father and a determined lawyer named Bela Jain, she begins a grueling legal battle for “Haq” (her right) to financial maintenance.
What starts as a personal fight for survival soon evolves into a monumental struggle that catches the attention of the entire nation.
As the case moves from local courts to the Supreme Court of India, it sparks a massive cultural and political storm. The film portrays the intense pressure Shazia faces from religious leaders and society, who view her legal pursuit as an attack on personal faith. The narrative explores the complex intersection of constitutional law and traditional practices, highlighting the human cost of being caught between two worlds.
Inspired by the landmark real-life Shah Bano case, the film reaches a climactic peak in the highest court of the land. It is not just a story of legal arguments, but a deeply emotional journey of a woman finding her voice and demanding equality. The finale serves as a reminder of a turning point in Indian history that reshaped the discourse on women’s rights and justice for decades to come.
