Synopsis

At 49, Agneta feels like she has become transparent. Her adult children only call when they need money, her job at the traffic office is a dead end, and her husband has replaced their connection with a sudden obsession for ice-cold baths and expensive cycling gear.

“Je m’appelle Agneta” is based on the best-selling novel by Emma Hamberg of the same name.

In a moment of “crisis or courage,” Agneta answers a mysterious newspaper ad for an au pair job for a “Swedish boy” in a large house in Provence. She leaves her predictable life behind, only to arrive in France and discover a massive misunderstanding: the “boy” is actually Einar, an eccentric, elderly gentleman living in a converted monastery. What follows is a messy, life-affirming journey where Agneta trades birdwatching and crosswords for cheese, wine, dancing, and rediscovering her own desires.
