Synopsis

The story is set against the backdrop of the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War and follows the real-life journey of Captain Balram Singh Mehta. Balram is a young, somewhat undisciplined officer in the 45th Cavalry regiment of the Indian Army. The film explores his “coming-of-age” as he is thrust into the chaos of the Battle of Garibpur on the eastern front, a pivotal conflict that ultimately led to the liberation of Bangladesh.

The film’s title, Pippa, refers to the Russian PT-76 amphibious tanks used by the regiment, which were nicknamed “Pippas” (empty ghee tins) because of their ability to float effortlessly on water. When the squadron’s leader is incapacitated during a crucial mission, Balram must step up, take command, and lead his men through treacherous terrain and intense combat. His journey is not just about military strategy, but about finding his own sense of duty and honor under extreme pressure.

Parallel to Balram’s story is the involvement of his siblings, who are also part of the war effort. His elder brother, Major Ram Mehta, is a disciplined soldier conducting covert operations behind enemy lines, while his sister, Radha, works as a code-breaker. The film highlights the unique perspective of an entire family serving on the frontlines, showing how the war affects their personal bonds and their shared commitment to the nation.
