Synopsis

The story follows Tova Sullivan, a stoic and lonely widow who spends her nights cleaning the Sowell Bay Aquarium. Still grieving the loss of her husband and the mysterious disappearance of her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, decades ago, Tova finds solace in the quiet routine of her work and the company of the sea creatures. She eventually forms an unlikely and profound bond with Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus who is as intelligent as he is observant.

Marcellus, who narrates parts of the story from his tank, has spent his life watching the humans who pass by his enclosure. He has a secret hobby of escaping his tank at night to scavenge for snacks, and it is during these nocturnal adventures that he and Tova strike up a friendship. Despite his initial disdain for humans, Marcellus takes a liking to Tova and decides to use his superior intellect to help her uncover the truth about her son’s disappearance.

Meanwhile, a wayward young man named Cameron arrives in Sowell Bay in search of his own family roots. Having struggled to hold down a job or find his place in the world, Cameron takes over Tova’s cleaning duties at the aquarium when she suffers an injury. Initially at odds with Tova’s meticulous nature, Cameron eventually begins to bond with her, unaware that their lives are more deeply intertwined than either of them could imagine.

The film explores the healing power of connection and the idea that family can be found in the most unexpected places. As Marcellus carefully leaves clues for Tova and Cameron, the pieces of a thirty-year-old mystery begin to fall into place. The narrative culminates in a life-changing discovery that brings closure to Tova’s long-standing grief and offers Cameron the sense of belonging he has been searching for his entire life
