Synopsis

Set about a century before the events of Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2026) is the latest television expansion of George R.R. Martin’s Westeros. Moving away from the high-stakes political wars and dragons of its predecessors, this series offers a more intimate, character-driven look at the realm through the eyes of two traveling companions.

The story follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a young and honest “hedge knight”—a knight without a lord or a permanent home. After the death of his mentor, Dunk sets out to find his own path in a Westeros where the Targaryen dynasty is at its peak but internal tensions are simmering. His life changes forever when he crosses paths with a scrappy, bald-headed boy named Egg, who insists on becoming his squire.

Unbeknownst to Dunk at first, “Egg” is actually Prince Aegon Targaryen, a young member of the royal family who has gone into hiding to experience the world outside the Red Keep. Together, the massive knight and the tiny prince travel the countryside, participating in tournaments and protecting the smallfolk. Their bond becomes the heart of the show, as the naive but noble Dunk teaches the future king what it truly means to be a hero.

The first season focuses on the “Hedge Knight” storyline, where Dunk enters a prestigious tournament at Ashford Meadow. What begins as a quest for glory quickly turns into a dangerous legal battle when Dunk defends a commoner against a cruel Targaryen prince. To save his life and honor, Dunk must face a “Trial of Seven”—a legendary and deadly battle where seven knights must fight seven others to prove his innocence.

The series is praised for its lighter, more adventurous tone compared to the dark tragedy of House of the Dragon. It explores themes of chivalry, the gap between the rich and the poor, and the slow decline of the Targaryen line. With the last dragons long dead, the show relies on swordplay, wit, and the growing friendship between a man who has nothing and a boy who will eventually have everything.
