Synopsis

The buzz around Boyfriend on Demand (also known as Monthly Boyfriend), the series stars BLACKPINK’s Jisoo as Seo Mi-rae, a chronically overworked webtoon producer who has essentially retired from the chaos of real-world dating. Seeking an emotional outlet that doesn’t require actual effort, she subscribes to a high-end virtual reality service that allows her to “order” customized, flawless romantic experiences. The show is directed by Kim Jung-sik, the mind behind the hit Work Later, Drink Now, promising a perfect blend of sharp comedy and heartfelt character growth.

The core of the story lies in the contrast between Mi-rae’s “dream” life and her grounded reality. While her digital world is populated by a rotating cast of “perfect” men—portrayed by an incredible lineup of guest stars like Lee Jae-wook, Seo Kang-joon, and Lee Soo-hyuk—her real life is dominated by her workplace rival, Park Kyeong-nam (Seo In-guk). As Mi-rae and Kyeong-nam become “overtime buddies” while chasing webtoon deadlines, a slow-burn chemistry develops that challenges her preference for digital perfection. The series cleverly uses this “enemies-to-lovers” dynamic to explore whether a messy, real-world connection can ever compete with a curated fantasy.

Beyond the romance, the series is generating significant discussion for its timely social themes. It dives deep into the “burnout culture” of modern-day Seoul and the growing reliance on technology to fulfill emotional needs. By framing virtual dating as a “subscription service,” the show asks uncomfortable but relatable questions about the commodification of intimacy and the fear of vulnerability. With 10 episodes total, the drama is expected to be a visual treat, transitioning between the polished, cinematic aesthetics of the virtual dates and the gritty, realistic atmosphere of a high-pressure office.
