Synopsis

The story follows Alison Brooks, a smart and determined deaf woman who works in the canteen of a local police station. While she leads a quiet life supporting her mother, she possesses an extraordinary talent for lip-reading, which she has honed over years of observing conversations in the busy canteen and at a local bar where she moonlighted.

Her life changes when her skills catch the eye of DS Ashleigh Francis. The police are currently surveilling a ruthless criminal gang plotting a high-stakes jewelry heist but are struggling to capture clear audio from their meetings. Alison is recruited as a civilian volunteer to act as an “emergency lip-reader,” interpreting the gang’s secret plans from silent surveillance footage.

As she becomes more involved in the investigation, Alison find herself drawn into a dangerous “cat-and-mouse” game. The stakes become personal when she forms an unexpected and complicated bond with Liam Barlow, a young man who has been recruited by the gang as a security hacker. Alison is forced to balance her duty to the police with her growing feelings for a man who is technically her target.

The series is a tense exploration of communication, trust, and the deaf experience. It highlights how Alison is often underestimated by those around her, eventually proving that her unique perspective is the key to cracking the case. The narrative moves from the police station to the heart of the criminal underworld, leading to a high-stakes finale involving betrayal and difficult moral choices.
