Synopsis

Set against the volatile and politically charged backdrop of Calcutta in 1971, the series unfolds during the height of the Bangladesh Liberation War. The narrative centers on a dimly lit, smoky jazz club that serves as the heartbeat of the city’s underground culture. While the melodies of trumpets and saxophones fill the air, the club acts as a covert sanctuary where artists, revolutionaries, and international spies converge. In this “city of joy,” music is not just entertainment; it is the coded language of resistance and a front for the dangerous business of espionage.

At the heart of the story is Jimmy Roy (Arifin Shuvoo), a charming yet elusive hustler with a buried past. Jimmy has spent his life avoiding responsibility and staying in the shadows, preferring the predictable rhythm of the jazz circuit over the chaos of politics. However, his life of detachment is shattered when he is reluctantly pulled into a murky world of power struggles and deception. As India prepares to help bring a new nation into existence, Jimmy finds himself caught between his instinct for self-preservation and a burgeoning moral duty to the cause of freedom.

The series explores the intricate relationships within this “Jazz City,” particularly Jimmy’s bond with Sheela (Sauraseni Maitra), a woman of immense courage and compassion whose own secrets are tied to the revolution. As the war intensifies across the border, the “soul of the city” begins to scream for change. Every note played in the club becomes a silent witness to history, and every choice Jimmy makes carries the weight of life and death, testing his loyalties to his friends, his past, and his evolving identity.

Produced by: Arpita Chatterjee (Studio 9 & StudioNext)

The climax of the series weaves together the birth of a nation with the personal awakening of its characters. It highlights the profound irony of a revolution born in the shadows of art, questioning whether peace can ever truly be found once the music stops. With a focus on the emotional cost of political awakening, Jazz City is a tribute to a transformative era where a language, a soul, and a country fought to be heard over the noise of oppression.

Production Fact

The series is gaining significant buzz for the Bollywood debut of Bangladeshi superstar Arifin Shuvoo. Early teasers have hinted that the timeline might span beyond 1971, possibly connecting the events of the revolution to more contemporary history like the Pulwama and 26/11 attacks.
