Synopsis
Set in the industrial landscape of 1970s Upper Silesia, Poland, the series follows Jolanta Wadowska-Król, a young and idealistic pediatrician. While working in the neighborhood of Szopienice, she begins to notice a disturbing trend: an increasing number of children are suffering from “mysterious illnesses” characterized by severe anemia, stunted growth, and cognitive issues. Her medical intuition leads her to suspect that these aren’t isolated cases but a mass health crisis.
Upon conducting secret tests, Jolanta discovers that the children are suffering from acute lead poisoning, also known as saturnism. She identifies the source as the massive local non-ferrous metal smelter, which is the heartbeat of the town’s economy. However, her discovery puts her in direct conflict with the communist state apparatus, which views the smelter as a symbol of industrial success that must be protected at all costs.
Threatened by the Security Service (SB) and pressured by hospital administrators to keep quiet, Jolanta must choose between her safe medical career and the lives of thousands of children. She begins an undercover crusade, visiting families in their homes to collect blood samples and documenting the environmental devastation hidden behind the factory’s smoke. Her fight is not just against a disease, but against a political system built on lies and censorship.
As she gathers allies—including a tough local nurse and a conflicted clinic head—the stakes become personal. The government monitors her every move, attempting to isolate her from the community she is trying to save. The series is a powerful tribute to a woman who refused to back down, eventually forcing the demolition of houses nearest to the smelter and securing life-saving treatment for over 5,000 children.
