Synopsis

Long Story Short is the highly anticipated new adult animated series from Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of BoJack Horseman. It premiered on Netflix this year and has already been renewed for a second season.

The series follows the Schwooper family—a middle-class Jewish family living in a world that is mostly grounded but occasionally dips into surreal, “BoJack-esque” absurdity. The narrative is non-linear, jumping back and forth across several decades (from 1959 to 2022) to explore how the siblings’ childhood dynamics shaped their complicated adult lives.

The main focus is on the three Schwooper siblings: Avi, the eldest, who struggles with his religious identity and a messy divorce; Shira, the middle child and only daughter, who deals with her mother’s constant criticism; and Yoshi, the youngest, whose goofy nature often leads him into bizarre situations—including an exploding mattress business and a run-in with literal wild wolves at his niece’s school.

As the story weaves through major milestones like bar mitzvahs, weddings, and career failures, it meticulously pieces together a “jigsaw puzzle” of a family. It explores deep themes of generational trauma, the evolving nature of sibling bonds, and the ways in which we inherit our parents’ neuroses while trying to carve out our own identities.

The show balances heartbreaking emotional honesty with dark, satirical wit. Whether it’s a high-stakes argument over sperm donation during a holiday recital or a surreal vision of a “Nobel Prize for Emotional Regulation,” the series captures the “long story short” version of a life: the tiny, messy moments that eventually add up to a person’s entire history.
