Synopsis

The documentary offers an intimate, two-part look at the life and career of Paul Reubens, the man who created and spent decades completely inhabiting the character of Pee-wee Herman. Part One explores Reubens’ childhood, his early days in the Los Angeles improv scene with The Groundlings, and the meteoric rise of the “Pee-wee” phenomenon that culminated in the 1985 cult classic film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.

A significant portion of the series focuses on the thin line between the artist and the alter-ego. It reveals how Reubens intentionally blurred his identity, rarely giving interviews as himself, which eventually complicated his personal life. The narrative details his struggle for creative control and the perfectionism that made Pee-wee’s Playhouse a 15-time Emmy-winning masterpiece of art and television.

The second part dives into the darker chapters of his career, including his 1991 and 2002 arrests and the subsequent media vilification. Using over 40 hours of candid interviews recorded before his passing, Reubens speaks openly for the first time about the homophobia he faced and the emotional toll of being falsely labeled a danger to children.

The series concludes with a deeply moving final message recorded by Reubens just one day before his death in 2023. It serves as both a confession and a celebration of a man who used his unique “weirdness” to teach a generation of kids that being different was something to be celebrated.
