Synopsis

The series follows Greg Russo (Steve Carell), a world-famous fiction author who has built a legendary reputation through his gritty, larger-than-life “Rooster” book series. However, Greg himself is far less adventurous than his fictional alter-ego. When his adult daughter, Katie (Charly Clive), a professor at the elite Ludlow College, hits a major personal crisis—including a messy divorce from her cheating husband (Phil Dunster) and a series of “accidental” campus disasters—Greg decides to swoop in and help.

Moving onto the college campus to support her, Greg quickly realizes that he is more of a celebrity than a “help.” To the students, he is the Rooster, and they begin treating him like the rebellious icon of his novels. Greg finds himself sucked into a “second adolescence,” succumbing to peer pressure from 20-somethings, clashing with the Dean (John C. McGinley), and navigating the hilarious friction between his real identity and his public persona.

The 10-episode season, created by the comedy powerhouse duo of Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Scrubs) and Matt Tarses, balances laugh-out-loud campus antics with a heartfelt exploration of a father and daughter trying to redefine their relationship as adults. As Greg tries to “fix” Katie’s life, he discovers that perhaps he’s the one who needs to grow up, eventually learning that being a hero isn’t about writing bestsellers, but about being present when things get messy.
