Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of World War II, the story follows Dorrigo Evans, an Australian army surgeon whose life is defined by a brief but intense love affair and the harrowing experience of war. The narrative moves across three timelines: his youthful pre-war days, his time as a prisoner of war (POW), and his later years as a celebrated but haunted war hero.

In the 1940s, Dorrigo falls into a passionate, forbidden romance with Amy Mulvaney, his uncle’s young wife. This relationship becomes his emotional anchor when he is later deployed and captured by Japanese forces. He is forced into brutal labor on the infamous “Death Railway” (Thailand-Burma Railway), where he must lead his fellow prisoners through starvation, disease, and unimaginable cruelty.

The series depicts the visceral reality of the POW camps, where Dorrigo struggles to maintain his humanity while making impossible medical and moral choices. His memories of Amy serve as a “narrow road” of hope that sustains him through the darkness, even as he witnesses the best and worst of the human spirit around him.

Decades later, in the 1980s, an older Dorrigo is a respected surgeon and public figure, yet he remains deeply traumatized by his past. The show explores the “mirror and the light” of memory, showing how the ghosts of the war and his lost love continue to shape his marriage to his wife, Ella, and his ultimate legacy. It is a powerful meditation on love, survival, and the inescapable nature of the past.
