Synopsis
Based on the acclaimed debut novel by Julia May Jonas, the series centers on an unnamed, middle-aged English professor (Rachel Weisz) at a small liberal arts college. Her life is in a state of quiet crisis: her once-celebrated writing career has stalled, and her husband and fellow professor, John (John Slattery), is embroiled in a scandal involving past investigations into his conduct with students.
Amidst this professional and personal unraveling, she becomes dangerously obsessed with a magnetic new faculty member, Vladimir (Leo Woodall), a young, “hot-shot” novelist. The show explores the blurry lines between reality and scandalous fantasy, as the protagonist uses her obsession as a “revivifying force” to reclaim her sense of power and desire. The series is noted for Weisz’s character frequently breaking the fourth wall to address the audience directly as an unreliable narrator.
Release Note
In a rare move for a streaming series, Netflix has announced that Vladimir will also have a limited theatrical run in select U.S. cities alongside its digital debut.
