Synopsis

Rekhachithram (Facial Composite) is an innovative mystery thriller that blends contemporary crime investigation with a nostalgic “alternate history” of the Malayalam film industry. The story follows Vivek Gopinath, a disgraced police officer who has recently returned to duty at a remote station in Malakkappara following a suspension for online gambling. His quiet reinstatement is shattered when a local man named Rajendran livestreams a shocking confession on Facebook before committing suicide, claiming involvement in a decades-old murder.

The confession reopens a cold case from 1985 involving the disappearance of Rekha Pathrose, an aspiring actress and devoted fan of megastar Mammootty. The narrative reveals that Rekha vanished during the filming of the real-life cult classic Kathodu Kathoram. Vivek’s investigation takes him deep into the history of that film’s production, forcing him to reconstruct the identity and final days of a victim whose very existence has been largely forgotten by time.

As Vivek digs deeper, he uncovers a web of secrets involving powerful figures from the past, including a wealthy business tycoon named Vincent who was connected to the 1985 film set. The movie uniquely utilizes real-world cinema history, featuring AI-assisted cameos and archival references to legendary filmmakers and actors. This “meta” approach turns the investigation into a tribute to the golden era of Malayalam cinema, where the lines between the silver screen and reality become dangerously blurred.

The film builds toward a gripping climax that explains how a young woman’s dreams were crushed amidst the chaos of a busy movie set. Vivek must use forensic art—the titular “Rekhachithram”—and modern investigative techniques to solve a case where most witnesses have either passed away or have a vested interest in keeping the truth buried.
